The Astros managerial circus comes to town starting tomorrow.  Actually I’m kidding because having the set schedule and the fact the names have slowly leaked out over the past week the club is playing it smart.  Every candidate has a schedule, starting with Dave Clark and Al Pedrique tomorrow and will meet the press .

I had a good phone conversation with Phil Garner this morning and  caught up with him for an on-camera interview tonight to talk about why he wants this job.

Phil told me he has no ill feelings towards the organization and felt at the time of his firing Drayton did what he felt was necessary.  It’s part of the business, any business and he’s ok with that.

Phil wants this job and feels he’s the guy that can motivate some of these chirping vets that ruined the clubhouse atmosphere this past season.  Gar will not put up with the antics that went on behind the scenes.  He’ll address it head on and get things taken care of.

You’ll see part of my interview on Local 2 Sports at 10 tonight along with click2houston.com’s sports page.

Garner interviews on Saturday.  It says here he’s da man !   we’ll find out soon if that indeed is true.

Phil Garner has had plenty of free time on his hands since August of 2007 when he was fired by Drayton McLane

“Well right now I can tell you my golf game isn’t improving liked I hoped it would,” Garner said in an interivew with KPRC Local 2 Sports.  “I don’t think I’ll be on the senior tour anytime soon!”

Garner has spent a lot of his time since his departure from the Astros playing golf, riding Harley’s and spending time with family and other business ventures.

Gar has kept his options open every time a position opens.  ” You know when slots open you always keep an eye on them.”

After time away from the game he’s ready to jump back into the grind that goes with managing a baseball team.

“I’m ready to give it a go and jump in. I’d like to see how I stack up against these other guys up for the job.”

Garner told KPRC Local 2 that interest developed Friday when putting in a call to Tal Smith about another matter.

” I called Tal back on Thursday or Friday and it lead to him asking “Are you interested? and the more I thought about it I thought yes I was,” Garner said.

” I love this city, I feel like I’m a Houston guy and I want the good feeling about baseball here to come back.”

Garner’s tenure with the Astros produced a 2004 trip to the NLCS against the Cardinals and was highlighted by a 2005 run to the World Series.

The chaos inside the Astros clubhouse would not of been tolerated under Garner’s watch.  Players badmouthing Cecil Cooper behind his back, lack of hustle,  and mental errors would of been fixed quickly by Garner.

He’s a no-nonsense type of skipper who commands respect.

Garner is proven and based on our click2houston.com sports poll he is the overwhelming choice of the people.

Garner will formally interview on Saturday with the Astros.  If the club is smart, this process will be short and sweet.   I’m intrigued by what a Bob Melvin or Tim Bogar would bring to the table.   Manny Acta’s track record will hurt him in the eyes of fans and believe me, don’t think for a minute Drayton wants this hire to not only work on the field but also put bodies back in the MMP seats.

On this list of 10, the ONLY man that can do both is Phil Garner.

Here’s hoping he’s back in uniform when the boys hit Kissimmee in February.

I was already looking forward to hearing Bobby V’s daily briefings in Kissimmee and Minute Maid Park. He’s the kind of manager the Astros clubhouse would of enjoyed.  A big personality with a passion for the game and an attitude that would of  meshed well with the Vets coming back along with the young kiddos the club wants to push through in 2010 not to mention the Astros fan base. .  I also enjoyed Bobby’s restaurant in Arlington back in the day but that’s another story.  Good eatin’ there boys. So Bobby V will have to settle for ESPN for now.

Kirk Gibson would of also been one of those old school skippers that could of been a nice fit.  You think of  KG and that playoff homer with the Dodgers on a bad leg is all the motivation you need. He too will have to wait for another shot elsewhere.

Coulda, Shoulda, Woulda…   Valentine and Gibson did not make the final cut as the list of 10 was announced today by the club.    You won’t be shocked at it as most of the names have surfaced over the past two weeks as likely candidates.

All except Phil Garner.

Yes Phil Garner has thrown his hat into the ring for the job.  I say …why not.  He knows the drill and will come cheap enough for Drayton who has never paid big bucks for his managers.

Also on the list:  Former Brewers Manager Ned Yost,   Former D-backs skipper Bob Melvin ,  Dave Clark, Al Pedrique,  Padres Hitting Coach Randy Ready,  former Nats Manager Manny Acta, and Red Sox coaches Tim Bogar and Brad Mills.

Interviews begin Wednesday and as GM Ed Wade told Local 2 last Tuesday at his office,  it will be a thorough search and all candidates will be paraded through town with heavy media involvement.  Heck it’s October, so any coverage this fall is a bonus for the club.

Local 2 Sports photographers  Daryl George and Allen Reid are in tears now that they can’t make their multiple trips out to IAH to camp out for the arrivals of these guys.  Now they’ll set up shop at MMP where the team will interview the candidates and then hold news conferences for media folk where every single one of the candidates will tell us how much they love Drayton, the Astros, the talent and ……. that a championship is coming..

Kind of an odd way to handle this kind of job search.  The club said today the candiates will meet one group in interview #1 and then if brought back for a 2nd, will then meet Drayton and Pam Gardner for a final stamping of approval.

Again, odd way to fill a job.  This is a big deal at a crucial time for the ballclub.  They can’t afford to screw this up.  Now you have 20 sets of eyes involved and it will give everybody a case of tired head out at the ballyard compound.

Let’s get this done, get it done right and move forward. There’s a ballclub that needs repairing and Vet’s attitudes to change.  Then again, some showed this season they may not care too much.

Stay tuned… the parade starts Wednesday.

Texans no 1st half fire, Texans lose 28-21

 What’s your take ?      sports@click2houston.com     or    randysrants@click2houston.com

Another Sunday for our NFL squad and another flop..at through 3 quarters.  Our Local 2 Sports rep, Daryl George was delayed getting into Phoenix because of a security breach.  No worries, he hadn’t missed a thing on the positive front from the Texans who trailed 21-0 at the half.  The game began with a penalty and fumble so you got the idea quickly this may be a long day..

Routes are off,  Schaub’s throws had no zip on them and Kurt Warner is lighting up the Texans defense.  The TV crew has taken a few shots of a livid Kubiak on the sideline.  He should be .

UPDATE:   SCHAUB TO ANDRE AND NOW IT’S 21-14.

Meanwhile have I told you that I really think the Texans are a great team and can win on the road at any time?

UPDATE 2:  SCHAUB TO ANDRE TD…. TIED AT 21-21

Wow, i can’t wait until the playoffs get here. These Texans are a post-season team don’t ya think?

UPDATE 3:  Schaub picked off by Rogers Cromartie..pick 6… AZ back up 28-21.. why did Schaub attempt that pass?

UPDATE4:  Texans can get a yard from the 1 yd line twice and lose 28-21.. They deserve this loss.

Tuesday I spent some time with Astros GM Ed Wade at the downtown MMP compound. Ed indicated to me then that he and his advisory team (including Drayton and Tal) would sit down and form a list from the nearly 3 pages of candidates who they knew of and others that had been brough to their attention. Wade also told me that the list would be made up of nearly 10 finalists. Experience, Wade said Tuesday ,was vital on the Major League and Minor league level or a combination of the two.

Well, let the game begin. The brass have met and now it’s time to get to work. Wade has consulted with the big boss and interviews  says look for those interviews to begin the middle of next week.

L2Sports:   Now process begins, where do you stand on a timetable

Wade:  The housekeeping of roster begins immediately.  Primary focus is on mangerial search. We’ll meet later this week and form committee that will talk to each candidate and go through process to ask for permission. see where it leads from there.

L2Sports:  13 games with Dave Clark, did you like what you saw, will he be a serious candidate?

Wade:  absolutely, dave did a fine job. sort of fast break into the job.  i thought from standpoint of communication and fitting in with group, he did very good work for us. He’s a solid candidate going forward

Local2Sports:  What characteristics do you want in your manager?

Wade:  We want experience, minor lg or big league.  This core group will be veterans.  It’s important for vets to understand credentials the individual brings to the job.  The more qualifications someone has, the more respected they are.  It’s important development process doesn’t stop at triple-a..  continues at big league level, we’ll going to try to fold some young players in next year.  with that comes frustration, movement can be slow.. impt that guy understands that teaching part won’t end at triple -a.. his job to bring these kids to next level and several levels beyond where they are now.

L2Sports:  You have a good track record of hiring managers, rely on that?

Wade:  I’ve been through it enough to know you don’t want to go through it often ( laughs).  it’s tough..everybody interviews well.  I have 3 pages of names, we’ll whittle it down to under 10.  Guys don’t eliminate themselves.  Case of us doing our homework and looking at a body of work and to see if he fits the profile of our personalities here.  I’ve told people, end of day, we’d like to have a mgr, we bump into a player at the airport and he says– “the best manager I ever played for was that guy in Houston in 2010″. If we can do that we’ve hit a pretty good mark and go towards our goal of running a parade down Texas avenue.

L2Sports:   Fine line between a team that misses out and a contender?

Wade:  one of the most difficult things to do is to objectively assess where they are, particularly right after season ends.  You’ve lived through the plusses and minuses and this season, a lot of minuses. It’s easy to put opinions in stone and not have open mind.  Important we step back and look ..we know from payroll we’ll make downward adjustments , bring in kids, 10 prospective Free agents to pick from, we don’t want to have oldest opening day roster in baseball..   If a few things had gone differently it would of been different.  We have to spend x-number of months to assess and try to get better. Sometimes it means stay the course , sometimes you shake it up.

L2Sports:  What’s the payroll situation?

Wade:  The economy has impacted sports now. We’re recognizing we have to pick and choose between some of the guys we have. Backend of bullpen is eligible for FA.. Valverde and Hawkins…Brocail…to Infield..you have Blum and Miggy– 199 hits and 2 all star appearances… we’ll have to make tough decisions because of economic environment. but at end of the day it’s a try to put best team on field and we’ll make every effort to make those decisions work to our advantage.

L2Sports:  Can you compete with a lower payroll ?

Wade:  We’re going to have to find a way to do that. We have a great market and fans. We have to do it the right way. Some of it will take time because of condition of farm system but there’s no reason to think if we come back next year with healthy Oswalt and Berkman and Lee are playing to the form they’ve done almost entire careers. then we have a chance to be back in this thing.

L2Sports:   in rotation with Roy, Wandy and Bud.. what’s left?

Wade:  Opportunity is out there.  list of FA is a small list.. Randy Wolf who was here year ago, would of been great to retain him last year.  there’s 2 or 3 guys there. realistically, we’ll have to be aggressive to have those conversations. I don’t think we can fall back into mode of signing guys that we “hope” are healthy, probably better off as you mentioned- a healthy Oswalt, Wandy and Bud Norris..and Moehler..–if you look at what’s he did in 2008 to the end..ERA was in low 4’s…this year until he went to DL was low 4’s.. We have option we can exercise and get him back here.  There may be a trade out there that brings us a young arm.   If we can predict now that Roy is going to be fine and with Wandy and Norris behind him, a lot of teams would be envious of our situation to have guys like that at the top to set the stage for us.

L2Sports:  Thoughts on kids- Manzella, Johnson and Castro and chances for 2010

Wade:  We’re not going to base decisions on September, Manzella got 4 ab’s.. Chris Johnson struggled, you don’t get fooled by what you see in September plus or minus. We know skill sets of all players.  Edwin Maysonett did for us. Fulchino, Arias before he got hurt.  There’s a young element that can contribute sooner rather than later.  Castro- would be great if he’s ready for opening day we’ll probably plan that he’s not and be surprised if he is.    There are guys knocking on the door that will get opportunities when they get to spring training to show they are ready to perform at this level right away.

L2Sports:  Why didn’t the prospects get more of a look in September with team out of the race?

Wade:    I think it’s impt as organization when you have Blum/Tejada that have gone out banged up.. they went out every day, you don’t push them off to the side. We have interest in Blum and Miggy about coming back, if we shoved them off to get kids a few at bats it sends the wrong message and doesn’t pay proper respect.

Wade:   We’re not going to make decisions on young guys based on Sept. It was good for them to soak in atmosphere and understanding what environment is all about. We’ll make right decision on those guys moving forward.

L2Sports:   Is this organization preaching patience to fans?

Wade:   I’m one of the most impatient people in the world. Hard to preach it to myself.  We’re going to try , when i got this job, go on parallel paths.  try to be championship caliber at big league level. Get good and stay good. Scouting development has to prevail in process. Will there be rough spots? sure there will be.   As we get away from ‘09 and focus on 2010, we’ll work like crazy to get this club straightened out to get off to better start early in season and put pressure on . If we can get on to a good start, the momentum will build, put the pedal to metal and see what happens.

The day is going well for the Texans at Reliant Stadium like it should be.   13-3 lead in the 2nd quarter.. Steve Slaton’s 32 yard sprint to the endzone…was the Texans first rushing TD of the season!  Took long enough didn’t it?

Slaton is running hard and the offensive line is active especially the left side.  Studdard is clearing space well today.  Nice protection for Schaub early but it faded. Schaub sacked 4 times by late in the 3rd quarter.

Schaub , by the way, is the NFL’s top rated passer dating back to week 7 of last year.  QB rating over 103.   When protected he’s solid.  When pressured he’s antsy and mistake prone.

UPDATE:  TEXANS JUST SCORED AGAIN.  SCHAUB DUMP OFF TO SLATON AND HE COULD OF SKIPPED  IN THE ENTIRE 18 YARDS.. RAIDERS ARE JUST TERRIBLE.    DON’T LET THIS WIN GIVE YOU FALSE HOPE ABOUT THE TEXANS.  TODAY IS NOT A MEASURING STICK FOR HOUSTON DEFENSE.

UPDATE:    GREAT SEQUENCE IN 3RD QUARTER…CUSHING WRAPS UP VARGAS FOR SAFETY THEN ON ENSUING PUNT, JACOBY RETURNS IT 95 YARDS FOR A TOUCHDOWN TO MAKE IT 29-6 TEXANS.    AGAIN, IT’S OAKLAND DON’T GET TOO EXCITED

With his team off to an embarrassing 1-2 start, including two home losses, Texans Owner Bob McNair offered up a big dose of  “owner-speak” at the compound on Thursday regarding the status of Gary Kubiak and his staff.

Of course McNair will say things are ok.  ” It’s still early and we have 13 games to play. I’m excited about our team and about our chances.”

But lay an egg against Oakland Sunday,  which honestly I would be shocked if that happened,  and there could be trouble on Kirby.

Another loss to the Raiders, a 1-3 start with 4 of their next 6 on the road won’t sit well with McNair or the demanding fans.  After a phone call yesterday not long after I wrote about McNair and the Texans ,  I even more convinced the pressure is on this weekend like never before.

Now back to McNair owner-speak: ” Some believe this is a make or break game.’   “Clearly, early on, the more you lose the more difficult it is to wind up with the kind of record you need at the end of the year”

Really?

I predicted yesterday a Texans 31-17 win . That will mean the defense actually shows up and delivers against a very weak  Raiders offense.

Lose to Oakland, fall to 1-3…The Texans will need to finish the season a minimum 9-3 in their final 12 games and preferably 10-2.

Look at their schedule and tell me what you think?    Says here it ain’t gonna happen folks if their pinned into a corner with a loss Sunday.
